How to obtain a Costa Rican Driver’s License

Your first Costa Rican driver’s license.
You can obtain your first Costa Rican license by presenting your foreign license and a medical certificate or report. There are places around COSEVI where you can get the medical certificate; there are English speaking doctors too. The price of the certificate is about USD$24.00.
Documents required
1. Up-to-date passport (with a visa entrance not older than three months), your Costa Rican resident card or any other document that accredits you as a resident.
2. Up-to-date foreign driver’s license. Original and one photocopy.
3. Medical Certificate for Driver’s License.
4. Your application must be authorized by the headquarters or sub-headquarters of the License Department or by the director of the General Office of Driving Education.
5. In case you are presenting an expired driver’s license from your country of origin you will have to present all these requirements and take the driving test.
Renewing your foreign driver’s license.
1. Medical Certificate for driver’s license.
2. Up to date passport, resident card, temporary resident card, Pease Corps card, refugee card or any other document that can demonstrate your immigration status.
3. Driver’s license from your country of origin.
Driver’s license duplicates for Foreigners.
1. If your driver’s license gets stolen you have to report it to the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (O.I.J.) or Guardia Rural.
2. Personal Residency Card or Passport.

5 years ¢ 10.000,00 Colones
