Address to the Turrialba Volcano, the Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba is among the least visited national parks within the country. The second tallest volcano in Costa Rica following theVolcan Irazu, the Turrialba Volcano was called Torre Alba or white smolder by the initial colonial Spanish colonists, who used to perceive plumes of smoke coming up on a regular basis from the volcano’s apex. Now mostly inactive, the only sights of movement from this volcano can be observed in the largest crater where sulphurous vapors rise from the crater base.
Situated in Cartago Province in the gorgeous Central Valley, the Turrialba Volcano National Park rests 40 miles east of the San Jose city and not many miles northwest of Turrialba.
