Panama´s Caribbean jewerly is recognized as a top tourism destination. The region of Bocas del Toro has calm and clean seas and large areas of forests and rainforests. It is also the last refuge for many endangered species. The diversity of birds, corals and marine life in the region has few comparisons in the world. These are just a 45-minute boat or 20 minutes by taxi on land.

From December to February there are the wettest months on the Atlantic side, but that’s not a reason to stop the hundreds of tourists that comes to see the hidden paradise.

Before, tourists arrives only from May to November, but that has changed. Now they are here in any month of the year.
The security and calm that prevails in the archipelago, as well as its tourist attraction, is the key of success.

After a journey of three minutes (300 m) by boat from Bocas (be careful with dolphins), you will reach the quiet island Carenero.
You can also take ten minutes to walk through the village in the Buccaneer Resort. Going to the islands of Bocas aren’t a problem.

If you do not own a yacht, the most efficient way to reach Bocas is by plane. Aeroperlas Regional and Torismo Aero offer flights from the airport Marcos A. Gelabert in Panama City (1 hour) to the International Airport Bocas. Adventurers on land will be able to travel by bus or car from cities of Panama and David, by the Inter-American Road and then take the road that crosses the Continental Division to the port Chiriqui Grande. From there, you can take ferries or water taxis to Bocas del Toro. You can also use the newly built road to Admiral who is close to Bocas.

In the town of Bocas there is a fair amount of small hotels and economic pensions for an accessible price. There are also a couple of small resorts located in a short distance from town.
Standing out among all the lodging facilities is Punta Caracol Eco-Resort, managed by Jose Luis Bordas native of Barcelona) who discovered Bocas del Toro after arriving Panama with a special grant from the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research. Orthopedic beds and haute cuisine are offered in these roofed huts, built on marine pilasters.

Punta Caracol, however, is an eco-resort, with a "green" conscience that incorporates solar panels and a system to treat serving water. Many of the vegetables and fruits consumed in the establishment are produced in the organic gardens of the resort (coconuts, tomatoes, bananas, etc.).
Guests can plan trips to the island Escudo de Veraguas for diving; organize adventures to wild rivers in the area, or on any plane ride in the province.
The economy of the area has the main source of income coming from the tourism industry today . In the last 5 years, it has been seen, that a large boom in the real estate industry has boosted the area of Bocas del Toro dramatically. Land has been literally fought over, with prices souring due to people wanting to own their own piece of paradise for holiday homes or a place to retire to when the time comes.
It has not gone totally over the top however, with some great bargains still available, such as some beachfront lots still available for under $45,000. With its laid back atmosphere, stunning natural beauty and its very low cost of living, this could well be the place you have been looking for, for your retirement.
