The canton is characterized by its natural wealth given mainly by the Carara National Park, which covers a large part of the south of Turrubares. It is also characterized for being the least populated canton in Costa Rica and for being among those with the lowest population density (15.73 inhabitants/km²). Turrubares has the highest life expectancy in the country (85.5 years)
